Mr Alastair Denniston, Consultant Ophthalmologist (Uveitis/Medical Retina) & Hon Senior Lecturer

Alastair Denniston is Consultant Ophthalmologist (Uveitis and Medical Retina) at the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust and Hon Senior Lecturer, College of Medical and Dental Sciences.

Alastair’s specialist interests within ophthalmology are ocular immunity, ocular imaging and outcome measurement in inflammatory eye disease.

His laboratory work in immunology is directed towards understanding what causes intraocular inflammation (uveitis) and other forms of inflammatory eye disease.

Prof Philip Murray, Professor of Ophthalmology

Phil Murray is Professor of Ophthalmology. He is Clinical Lead, Graduate School, College of Medical and Dental Sciences and was a member of the University Senate (2008-10).

His main research interests revolve around immune mechanisms in the ocular microenvironment, in particular uveitis. He has been investigating why the eye cannot control inflammation in patients with uveitis.

Sue Southworth, Clinical Nurse Specialist

Sue Southworth is a senior nurse with special expertise in Birdshot Chorioretinopathy and is Research Coordinator for major projects relating to the National Birdshot Research Network, an exciting partnership between patients, scientists and eye specialists to make progress in the understanding and treatment of Birdshot Chorioretinopathy. She is currently overseeing the development of a National Registry for Birdshot Chorioretinopathy, and a National Biobank where patients who wish to can provide information, images or blood samples to help current and future research projects into this condition.
