Mr Richard Irving, Consultant ENT Surgeon

Richard Irving is one of the UK’s leading otologists – a specialist in the study of conditions of the ear, hearing and balance.

Richard offers specialist expertise in all aspects of ear disease, medically and surgically, in both adults and children. This includes chronic ear disease, tinnitus, balance disorders, acoustic neuroma, glomus jugulare tumours, and hearing loss as well as industrial deafness.

He is in demand for lecturing and teaching, nationally and internationally. To date he has published more than 100 articles on a variety of subjects related to ears and ear disease.

As a surgeon with an academic interest, Richard serves on the Editorial Boards of a number of international journals, including Otology & Neurotology, The Journal of Laryngology & Otology, and The International Journal of Advanced Otology. He is the current Secretary of the British Society for The History of ENT and The President of the British Society of Otology and a past Vice-President of the Royal Society of Medicine Section of Otology.

He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and is on the specialist register of the General Medical Council.

Mr Peter Monksfield is a consultant ENT surgeon who specializes in disorders of the ears. He also specializes in neurotology and has expertise in managing tumours related to the inner ear such as acoustic neuromas, glomus tumours and other malignant tumours. He was appointed as a consultant at the University Hospital Birmingham in 2010 and is also an honorary senior clinical lecturer at the University of Birmingham.

Peter has a strong research interest and is the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Clinical Research Network (CRN) lead for ENT in the West Midlands. He is currently running trials for patients with tinnitus and for patients with implanted hearing devices.

Juliette Durie-Gair, Lead Nurse for NF2 and Skull Base at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge

Working closely with the different clinicians within the skull base and NF2 teams, has given Juliette an in-depth knowledge of conditions and symptom management within these areas and she is able to independently provide advice and support to patients diagnosed with relevant conditions.

Juliette acts as the lead for user/carer issues and patient information for the skull base service and is actively involved in departmental audits, patient experience exercises and service reviews under the NHS cancer peer review programme.

She is the lead nurse for the NF2 highly specialised service within the region which was established in 2010.

Nicola took up the post of NF2 and Skull base nurse practitioner in 2013.

This involves working within a multi-disciplinary team, where patients are discussed in MDT meetings before being reviewed in clinic.

Since joining the team she has gained a vast knowledge about NF2 and skull base conditions and is able to provide advice and support to these patients during their initial diagnosis and throughout their care in the department.
