Occupational Therapy at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB) involves the following:

• Working to a philosophy of client centered practice, where the person is the focus of our treatment approach
• Facilitating people of all ages to enhance and improve function in everyday activities such as getting out of bed in the morning, preparing meals and looking after oneself
• Offering advice on adapting home environments to promote independence and safety
• Assessing and recommending equipment to maximise an individuals ability to carry out daily living activities
• Working alongside multidisciplinary teams to provide a client centred service
• Conducting our practice according to the Canadian Model of Occupational Performance
• Completing a variety of assessments including:
• Seating, posture and pressure relief
• Wheelchairs
• Upper limb splinting
• Cognitive assessments
• Functional assessments
• Offering advice and education in symptom control and use of equipment

Therapy Services include the following facilities:

• Suite consisting of three kitchens, bathroom and bedroom which enable occupational therapy staff to carry out assessments
• Specialist upper limb and scar management area for the treatment of complex upper limb and burns injuries by providing splints and pressure garments
• Range of specialist equipment to assess and practice skills of daily living and occupation
• Multi-professional treatment areas in the Burns Unit

The Occupational Therapy team work across all clinical specialties, both inpatients and outpatients and offer support to external organisations including Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice and The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital.
