The Ophthalmology Department is based in Outpatients Area 1 at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB). It provides ophthalmology outpatient facilities and day case surgery.

As well as 14 consultant ophthalmologists, the eye service is supported by an Orthoptic Department, Optometrist and Low Vision Refraction Service, and a Low Vision Nurse Service. Many sub-speciality clinics have been developed, and there is close communication with consultants in other specialities.

In addition, ophthalmologists in training rotate to the eye department as part of the West Midlands regional training rotation, and the department also undertakes an active role in the teaching of medical students.

RNIB Eye Clinic Liaison Officers (ECLO’s) are based at all of the sites within the trust and are there to offer practical and emotional support to anyone affected by sight loss, including families and carers. Patients and their families do NOT need to make an appointment to see the ECLO and can see patients in clinic by asking a member of staff to direct them to the ECLO room.
