Renal genetic clinic

The renal genetic clinic is one of few in the country to offer a ‘one stop service’. Patients are seen by a consultant nephrologist with a special interest in genetics, a consultant geneticist with a special interest in renal genetic conditions and a renal genetic clinical nurse specialist.

We see patients with a wide range of genetic conditions, common as well as the very rare. Some of the conditions we see in clinic are as follows:

  • Autosomal Dominant/Autosomal Recessive Polycystic Kidney Disease
  • Alport Syndrome
  • Thin basement membrane disease
  • Familial FSGS
  • Steroid resistant nephrotic syndrome
  • Tuberous Sclerosis
  • Juvenile Nephronophthisis
  • RCAD
  • Orofacial Digital Syndrome
  • Nail Patella Syndrome
  • Hereditary nephrotic syndrome

The focus of the clinic is to establish wherever possible, an accurate diagnosis and achieve optimal management of genetic causes of kidney disease.

The clinic runs every month, providing individual time slots that allows for discussions around patterns of inheritance, implications for family members, genetic testing and disease specific information and treatments.
