Renal metabolic clinic
Metabolism is the process by which our body breaks down the food we eat into proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. This process is necessary for growth and development, the correct functioning of organs, energy, and much more.
A metabolic disorder affects this normal process and can lead to having too much, or too little, of certain substances in your body. The renal metabolic clinic specialises in metabolic diseases that effect, or are caused by, the kidney.
The renal metabolic clinic is one of few in the country with a long experience of managing metabolic conditions that affect the kidney.
Some of the conditions seen in this clinic include:
- cystinosis
- Gitelman's Syndrome
- Bartter's Syndrome
- Gordon’s Syndrome
- renal tubular acidosis
- familial hypomagnesaemia with hypercalciuria and nephrocalcinosis
- recurrent kidney stones
- cystinuria
- primary hyperoxaluria
- unexplained electrolyte disturbances
Information about the service
First visit
Your first visit to the clinic may be with a specialist nurse. During this appointment the specialist nurse will answer any questions you have, explain to you the diagnosis pathway, and explain what to expect from your upcoming appointments. You will be asked to provide urine and blood samples. The results of which will guide us in making a diagnosis and will be available for discussion at your next appointment with the consultant
Second visit
The second visit will be with a specialist kidney doctor. The results from your first visit will be available which will allow the doctor to make an accurate assessment of your condition, and if necessary start you on the most appropriate course of treatment. This appointment will last 15-20 minutes.
Follow up
It may be necessary for you to carry on attending the renal metabolic clinic so that we can keep an eye on your condition and make sure that you are continuing to take the most appropriate medication. You will see either a specialist nurse or a doctor for your follow up appointments. The frequency of your appointments may change depending on your condition or treatment plan.
