Physiotherapy
Patients can be referred to physiotherapy by their GP or by any member of the hospital rheumatology team (i.e. consultant, nurses etc). Physiotherapy treatments are widely used to help reduce pain, improve function and maintain independence.
A physiotherapist specialising in rheumatology initially assesses all patients. After the initial assessment a treatment programme will be planned and agreed between the patient and the physiotherapist.
Although there are many treatments available in physiotherapy the evidence from recent research suggests that education and therapeutic exercise are the most beneficial.
