What is physiotherapy?

Crest: Chartered Society of PhysiotherapyPhysiotherapy is a healthcare profession dedicated to the restoration of movement, impairment and disability. Physiotherapists promote mobility, functional ability, quality of life and movement potential through examination, evaluation, diagnosis and physical intervention.

We apply an holistic and reasoned approach to help people of all ages and abilities to achieve their health goals, for example to return to independent living, the work environment or sport.

We work with individuals, or within a team, to promote physical independence by enhancing function – in particular musculoskeletal, neurological and cardio-respiratory problems – always encouraging individuals to assume responsibility for their health and well-being.

Examples of conditions for which we offer treatment include knee and lower back pain, neck pain and multiple joint symptoms. We are able to offer treatment and advice for a number of other conditions, including osteoarthritis, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, burns and respiratory conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD).

The evidence for physiotherapy

The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) has developed evidence-based posters to demonstrate the effectiveness of physiotherapy intervention for a number of common illnesses and disorders (see link below).
