The Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB) has the largest single Critical Care Unit in Europe, with 100 bed spaces.

Critical Care provides 24/7 treatment to adults, in a separate and self-contained area of the hospital.  It is dedicated to the management and monitoring of patients with life threatening conditions.  It provides specialist skills which include medical, nursing and other personnel experienced in the management of these patients.

There are four clinical Critical Care areas – A, B, C and D – which deliver all types of critical care requirements. All adult admissions come via the Emergency Department, Theatres, transfers from wards or transfers from other hospitals/countries.

We are specialist providers of a wide range of disciplines which include neurosurgery, burns, liver surgery, oncology, cardiac surgery, transplants and organ donation, plastic surgery, dermatology, maxillofacial, renal surgery, stroke, vascular surgery and urology. The Critical Care Unit also supports UHB as a Major Trauma Centre.

We have a strong working partnership with the Royal Centre of Defence Medicine, with defence personnel fully integrated within the Critical Care Unit to treat both military and civilian patients.

Critical Care also provides a nurse led follow-up clinic for those patients and their relatives who have spent time in the unit. We also provide dedicated facilities for relatives. 

The Trust leads with advances in technology and service developments and regularly participates in local and national research.  We also have strong charity links.
