Mr Mark Brewster (Orthopaedic Surgeon)

Mr Brewster was appointed as a hand surgery consultant in 2012. He received his medical degree from Leicester Medical School in 2001 and then completed his basic surgical training in the West Midlands. His orthopaedic training was also undertaken in the West Midlands with his final year comprising of a nationally selected hand surgery fellowship with both orthopaedic and plastic surgery specialists in Manchester. He completed an MSc in health sciences (trauma and orthopaedics) at the University of Warwick in 2010 and the British Hand Diploma in 2012.

His interests include wrist surgery, arthroscopy, arthritis (including joint replacements) and managing the more common hand conditions including Dupuytren’s disease (surgically and with collagenase injections), ulna nerve compression, carpal tunnel syndrome, base of thumb arthritis and trigger fingers. Mr Brewster’s elective practice is based at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham. He also works at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham where he mainly undertakes work in hand trauma and treatment of military patients with a wide range of upper limb injuries.

He is an associate member of British Society for the Surgery of the Hand and the British Orthopaedic Association and is an advanced trauma life support instructor.

Mr Darren Chester (Plastic Surgeon)

Mr Darren Chester was appointed as a consultant plastic and hand surgeon in 2007. He trained in plastic and hand surgery in the West Midlands and at the prestigious Pulvertaft Hand Centre in Derby. He was awarded the coveted McGregor Medal for his performance in his final plastic surgery exams (FRCSPlast.). He is currently the Clinical Service Lead in hand surgery at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

He provides a general hand service for common hand conditions including Dupuytren's contracture, nerve compressions such as cubital and carpal tunnel syndrome, and arthritis of the hand and trigger finger. His main sub-specialist interest is complex upper limb reconstruction following major injuries, including restoration of function following tendon and nerve injury as well as soft tissue cover.

Mr Chester has a particular interest in the management of blast injuries to the upper limbs. He is a full member of the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons.

Mr Michael Craigen (Orthopaedic Surgeon)

Mr Craigen was appointed as a hand surgery consultant in 1997. He received his medical degree from Guys Hospital Medical School in 1981 and then completed his basic surgical training in London. His orthopaedic training was undertaken in Aberdeen, Glasgow and Southampton, including hand fellowships in Wrightington Hospital under Professor John Stanley, in Louisville, Kentucky, USA at the Kleinert institute, and Jackson, Mississippi, USA under Dr Alan Freeland. He was appointed Senior Lecturer in Hand Surgery at Nottingham University in 1995 and moved to Birmingham in 1997.

His interests include wrist surgery, arthroscopy, upper limb spasticity, arthritis (including joint replacements) and elbow surgery, as well as managing the more common hand conditions, including nerve compression and trigger fingers. Mr Craigen is trained in the use of collagenase injections for Dupuytren’s contracture. His elective practice is mainly undertaken at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, with the majority of time at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham spent treating wrist fractures and military patients with a wide range of upper limb injuries.

Mr Craigen has a major interest in education and research, being involved in the British Society of Surgery of the Hand instructional courses and research committee and was chairman of the AO hand and wrist courses from 2006 – 2009.

Major Mark Foster (Plastic Surgeon)

Major Foster was appointed as a consultant hand surgeon and clinical lecturer in 2014. After 10 years in the British Army, Major Foster went to St Andrews and Manchester universities to study medicine. While at medical school he re-joined the military and trained as a trauma surgeon before moving into plastic and reconstructive surgery. In the latter part of his training he has researched the "Inflammatory Response to Trauma" for a PhD and is developing treatments to ameliorate the inflammatory response. He has been awarded research fellowships with the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Surgical Reconstruction and Microbiology Research Centre, the Academic Department of Military Surgery and Trauma, and The Royal College of Surgeons of England.

He has been deployed to the Balkans, Iraq and recently to Afghanistan.

His research interests include hand injuries in military patients, timing of reconstruction and the amelioration of the inflammatory response. He has also helped to develop a trials management database. Outside of work, Mark is a keen cave diver and helps run the Defence Medical Services Diving Club.

Mr Manish Gupta (Locum Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon)

Mr Gupta completed his medical training in Delhi and then gained his MRCS in surgery in Edinburgh. Most recently, in 2011, he completed the European Hand Diploma (FESSH) and has worked as a hand surgery specialty doctor in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital since 2009. In 2014 he was appointed as a locum consultant in the unit.

Mr Rajive Jose (Plastic Surgeon)

Mr Jose was appointed as a hand surgery consultant in 2011. He went to medical school and completed his early surgical training in Pondicherry, India. His plastic surgery training was undertaken in Birmingham. He has completed an advanced training post in hand surgery at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital and University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. He subsequently completed a fellowship at Pulvertaft Hand Centre at Derby. He completed the Diploma in Hand Surgery through the British Society for Surgery of the Hand in 2012.

Mr Jose’s practice encompasses all areas of hand surgery in adults. His main area of interest is soft tissue reconstruction including microsurgery. His work is undertaken at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, where he treats patients with upper limb and nerve injuries. He is a member of the British Society for Surgery of the Hand.

Mr Dominic Power (Orthopaedic Surgeon)

Mr Power is a member of the Edinburgh and London colleges of surgeons. He trained in orthopaedics at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, Birmingham. He completed fellowships in hand surgery at the Pulvertaft Centre in Derby and the Birmingham Hand Centre.

Mr Garth Titley (Plastic Surgeon)

Mr Titley was appointed as a hand surgery consultant in 1999. He graduated from Birmingham Medical school in 1986 with an MBChB distinction in surgery and the Sampson Gamgee Prize (first place in surgery). He was awarded an MSc for this research work in anatomy from the University of Birmingham. He completed his plastic surgery training in Newcastle-on-Tyne, Berkshire and throughout the West Midlands. He was awarded the Frank Cort Prize (1997) and a British Association of Plastic Surgeons travelling bursary (1998) to work and study at the internationally renown Hand and Microsurgery Unit of the Royal North Shore Hospital, Sydney, Australia.

He has published widely in medical literature, has an interest in surgical training and is on the West Midlands Specialist Training Committee for plastic surgery.

Mr Simon Tan (Orthopaedic Surgeon)

Mr Tan was appointed as a hand surgery consultant in 2008. He went to medical school and completed his early surgical training in London. His orthopaedic training was undertaken in Birmingham. He has completed a national hand surgery fellowship at the Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham as well as an international hand and microsurgery fellowship in the far east.

Mr Tan’s practice encompasses all areas of hand surgery in adults. His main areas of interest are in nerve surgery and reconstructive microsurgery. The majority of his work is undertaken at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, where he treats patients with upper limb and nerve injuries. Mr Michael Waldram (Orthopaedic Surgeon)

Mr Waldram qualified at the Royal Free hospital in 1977. He has been in consultant practice since 1993. He was a Christine Klienert hand fellow for one year in Louisville, USA in 1989.

He has a general interest in all aspects of hand surgery, with particular interest in rheumatoid arthritis and nerve compression. His interest in the treatment of Dupuytren’s contracture includes the new use of collagenase injections.

Mr Waldram is the programme director of the National Hand Surgery Diploma exam. Elective referrals should be made to the Royal Orhtopaedic Hospital, and hand trauma to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

Mr Petros Mikelaf (Hand Surgery Specialty Doctor)

Mr Mikalef returned to Birmingham in 2013 as a senior hand fellow and in 2014 was appointed as a hand surgery speciality doctor in the unit. He has previously worked as an orthopaedic locum consultant in Western Isles Hospital and was a Hand and Wrist fellow in the Royal Berkshire hospital. He completed the European Hand Diploma (FESSH) in 2014.
