Building on strong foundations

"We build on a noble heritage" - Steven F. Burman

These words were spoken by the Chairman of the United Birmingham Hospitals in 1950, and recount the distinguished history of the city's Queen's and General hospitals. They could just as easily be used to describe the spirit of enterprise which has gone into creating the new Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham today.

Although the buildings will go on to serve other purposes, the memories and pride in what was achieved at the old Queen Elizabeth and Selly Oak hospitals will play an integral part in shaping the character and ethos of the new hospital.

The vision of University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB), which runs both hospitals, is to bring together services from both facilities into a single environment; one which truly reflects the quality of care the hospitals' staff provide.

On these web pages you can read about the history of our hospitals and healthcare in Birmingham generally.

Browse our picture galleries to see how life at the hospitals has changed over the years. Take a look at our "Interviews" section to read stories of those who have been close to the hospitals. To see how you can get involved, visit the "Your memories" page.
