Neurology services and facilities
The Neurology department includes:
- a neurology ward (18 beds)
- a short-stay/investigation/treatment facility
- a neuroscience critical care area
- a diagnostic and interventional radiology centre
- a neurophysiology unit
- neuropathology
- a dedicated outpatient suite
Multi-disciplinary team working has been established, with neuro-ophthalmologists, neurogeneticists, neuropsychiatrists, neuropsychologists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists and dieticians to offer a comprehensive range of treatments.
Joint neurosurgical clinics are held for deep brain stimulation in movement disorders and epilepsy surgery. These clinics are in addition to the multiple general neurology clinics held daily.
Stroke medicine deals with patients who have suffered a stroke or transient ischaemic attack (TIA) (also known as a mini-stroke). Consultant neurologists and geriatricians with special interests in stroke deliver an acute stroke service which includes daily TIA clinics and thrombolysis (clot-busting treatment). There are also links to the 20-bed rehabilitation unit at Moseley Hall Hospital.
