Physiotherapy following breast reconstruction
Physiotherapists at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB) work very closely with consultants and specialist breast reconstruction nurses to ensure patients receive a high standard of care. The Physiotherapy team follows guidelines for both inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation which have been based on current evidence and have been agreed for use by the surgeons.
Inpatient physiotherapy following breast reconstruction
The aims of inpatient physiotherapy following breast reconstruction include:
- preventing respiratory complication after surgery
- optimising the patient’s mobility
- providing exercises to help regain shoulder movement and strength
- advising on return to normal daily activities
- advising on scar management
- advising on symptoms and care of lymphoedema (swelling)
Outpatient physiotherapy following breast reconstruction
Outpatient physiotherapy is available for any patient who has had breast reconstruction surgery.
The aims of outpatient physiotherapy following breast reconstruction include:
- progressing exercises to improve shoulder movement and strength
- providing scar management
- helping to decrease pain
- progressing abdominal exercises (DIEP and TRAM)
- enabling return to normal daily activities
- monitoring/treating lymphoedema (swelling)
