Cardiac rehabilitation

Cardiac rehabilitation at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB) is led by a multi-professional team (including physiotherapists) and includes education about diet, medication, stress management, smoking cessation and exercise. In addition, and where indicated, patients may be invited to join a weekly exercise programme.

Before being included on this exercise programme, patients are assessed and their level of fitness determined. Each patient is entered on to the programme at a level appropriate to their degree of fitness.

As patients improve they will progress through higher levels of exercise. This progression builds patient confidence and provides the sense of achievement and accomplishment necessary to support continued recovery.

Location/facilities

Patients are assessed in the ward environment soon after admission. This is phase one of the cardiac rehabilitation process.

During phase two, patients may be seen within a local health centre clinic, where a member of the cardiac rehabilitation team will be present.

Phase three includes the exercise component of cardiac rehabilitation and often takes place at QEHB within Therapy Services. Alternatively, and if more appropriate, supervised exercise programs are provided at local facilities in the community.

What problems do we manage?

  • Myocardial infarction (heart attack)
  • Angina
  • Cardiac surgery, e.g. stent/bypass or valve replacement
  • Heart transplantation

How can I get referred?

If QEHB is your nearest cardiac rehabilitation service then you will invited onto our programme. If we are not your local centre and you would prefer rehabilitation closer to home, then with your permission your details will be sent to your local centre and you can expect to receive an appointment from your local team.

Where is my nearest cardiac rehabilitation service?
