Rehabilitation for the older person (outpatients)

Physiotherapists in the elderly outpatient service play a key role in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of older people with mobility and musculoskeletal problems. Led by a clinical specialist, our goal is to fully enhance a person’s functional independence and to enable them to continue to live as independently as possible within the community.

The outpatient elderly rehabilitation service is embedded within the musculoskeletal service at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB). These facilities enable us to treat patients in a private yet open environment. We are able to call upon the knowledge and expertise of other physiotherapists within the service who specialise in the treatment of more complex musculoskeletal conditions.

We are also able offer class-based treatment, where patients are encouraged to exercise together in a relaxed atmosphere. At present we have classes aimed at improving balance and for those with osteoarthritis, as well as more general "fitness" classes.

Which conditions do we treat?

We have particular expertise in the assessment and treatment of:

  • complex and non-complex elderly musculoskeletal problems
  • falls and fractures
  • vestibular problems
  • balance impairments and "dizziness"
  • foot problems

The outpatient service has well-established close links with the team of geriatricians at QEHB, with whom we run a multi-disciplinary falls clinic on a regular basis. At this clinic, older people who present with falls and balance impairments are comprehensively assessed, advised and treated.

We have close links with:

  • the Trauma Unit and trauma consultants
  • the Pain Management team
  • Podiatry
  • Ear Nose and Throat services, and vestibular rehabilitation therapists

How can I get referred?

Referrals are usually made via your GP.
