Physiotherapy for trauma patients

Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB) is one of three Major Trauma Centres within the West Midlands and receives patients with multiple injuries from across the region for specialist care. The Trust has also housed the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine since 2001 and treats all casualties from multiple theatres of operation.

The Physiotherapy department treats patients with a wide range of traumatic injuries, including fractures, soft tissue injuries and wounds. The team also provides acute rehabilitation for people following trauma or elective procedures within a multi-disciplinary environment. We are based within Therapy Services at QEHB. Patients are treated within the ward environment or within our extensive inpatient treatment area.

Patients may be discharged home from QEHB, or referred for further rehabilitation in their local area. Communication pathways have been developed to ensure continuity of care in each individual’s ongoing rehabilitation. This includes the provision of support and guidance to clinicians where appropriate.
