Sport and Exercise Medicine
Sport and Exercise Medicine is a discipline within medicine and physiotherapy which deals with the medical care of injury and illness in sport and exercise. It can also help improve the health of the general public through exercise advice and prescription.
University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) offers a comprehensive service delivered by musculoskeletal physiotherapists and a consultant in Sport and Exercise Medicine.
The service is located in the new Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB). The hospital is the most modern and technologically advanced in the Midlands, with brand new gym facilities used in the rehabilitation of the UK’s military patients. The Sport and Exercise Medicine Service (SEMS) team also have links with the University of Birmingham’s High Performance Centre, a world class applied sports science and sports medicine support unit.
The SEMS team cares for recreational athletes, weekend warriors, enthusiastic exercisers and dancers, as well as elite athletes who choose to use the NHS. The team can treat patients aged 14 and over.
