Meet the team

Dr Kim Gregory

Dr Kim Gregory (Sports Physician)

Kim qualified from Warwick Medical School after completing a BSc in Physiology with Nutrition at the University of Southampton. She then undertook specialist training in Sport & Exercise Medicine in the West Midlands and has a Masters degree from the University of Bath. She is a Fellow of the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine (FSEM) and is an examiner for the FSEM and a part-time Teaching Fellow and Examiner for the University of Bath SEM diploma exam. She is a member of the British Association of Sport and Exercise Medicine (BASEM) and Royal College of Physicians (RCP).

A Consultant at University Hospitals of Birmingham, she leads the Sports and Exercise Medicine Service (SEMS) which includes a Dance Injury Clinic working in partnership with the National Institute of Dance Medicine and Science (NIDMS). Kim is also a Consultant in Sport and Exercise Medicine at University Hospitals of Leicester, where she leads the Paediatric and Adolescent Sport and Exercise Medicine clinic.

Kim was involved in both the London Olympic and Paralympic Games and Glasgow Commonwealth Games. She continues to work across a wide range of sports through her involvement with the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme in her clinic at Birmingham University Hi-Performance Centre.

Previously team doctor for the GB Disability Target Shooting Squad, England U15 Women’s football and GB Senior Women’s Ice Hockey team, she is currently Chief Medical Officer for British Basketball and a team doctor for the England Disability Football squads. She has experience working with Bolton Wanderers FC, Hartpury RFC and Coventry Blaze Ice Hockey teams as a match day doctor. Kim worked at the Invictus Games in 2014 and is a National Classifier for British Athletics.

Her clinical practice focuses on the non-operative management of musculoskeletal conditions and sports injuries and physical activity promotion for general health and for those with chronic health problems. Her particular specialty interests include adolescent sports medicine, disability sports medicine and dance medicine.

 
Emma Batchelor

Emma Batchelor (Consultant Physiotherapist)

Emma has worked as a Consultant Physiotherapist within the Sports and Exercise Medicine Service since November 2012. Emma has experience of working in elite sport for the last 12 years. She works as the Lead Physiotherapist for England and Great Britain’s Women’s Hockey within the English Institute of Sport. Emma has held this role since August 2011 when she initially took a secondment to work with the squad prior to London 2012 Olympics. She attended the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and went to Rio 2016 with GB Women’s hockey team where they won a gold medal.

Prior to working in hockey, Emma worked as the lead physiotherapist for England Netball from 2004-2011 and was involved in both the Melbourne and Delhi Commonwealth games. She also attended two netball World Cup tournaments.

From her time working in elite sport, Emma has a keen interest in rehabilitation and outcomes for return to sport and performing arts.

From an NHS perspective Emma has worked for the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust for over 20 years and this includes 10 years as a clinical specialist working in sports and musculoskeletal. During this time, Emma developed a keen interest in the management of patients post multiple trauma.

In addition to her BSc in physiotherapy, Emma has also completed a Masters Degree in Advancing Practice (Specialist Manipulative Physiotherapy) at Birmingham University in 2009.

Emma is keen to use the extensive experience she has gained working within the NHS and elite sport to maximise outcomes post injury and to advise on return to work and sport. Her mantra is that there is a sport or activity that is suitable for everyone.

 
Verity Appleyard

Verity Appleyard

Verity has worked in the Trust since 2014.

She graduated from the University of Birmingham twice, initially with a degree in Sport and Exercise Science after which she worked in various roles as an Exercise Professional.  She then completed a Physiotherapy degree. Verity previously worked at Russells Hall Hospital for nine years.

Outside work, Verity is a keen and competitive mountain biker. She races the National Series and has ridden in World Cups. She also competes at cyclocross and particularly loves the Three Peaks Cyclocross race.

Naturally, Verity has a special interest in cycling-related injury but also overtraining and overload in endurance sports.

 
Mark Liptrot

Mark Liptrot

Mark has been working as a physiotherapist within the Trust for over 12 years. He graduated from Teesside University and has worked in both the NHS and private sectors. He is pursuing a Master’s degree in Musculoskeletal Medicine and has worked in Sports and Exercise Medicine for the last four years.

His interests are tendinopathies of the lower limb, ankle injuries including acute sprains, stress injuries and disorders of the groin and pelvis.

A keen runner and triathlete he understands the punishment the body takes through training and competition.

 

Tammy Wai Yen Tang

Tammy Tang is a senior physiotherapist who graduated with BSc (Hons) from the University of Birmingham (1999) and has a Masters of Science with merit in Sports and Exercise Physiotherapy from the University of Cardiff (2015).

Tammy has worked at the Trust since 1999 in all core areas of physiotherapy but has remained committed to the area of out-patients with a specialist interest in sports. She is a member and former West Midlands lead for the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Sports and Exercise Medicine.

Tammy has worked with a number of national elite sports teams in rugby (Moseley RFC), netball (Hertfordshire Mavericks and England) and hockey (England and Great Britain). She has worked with national netball and hockey teams at different age groups including successful tours to South Africa and Australia. She is currently supporting England Hockey in a range of training camps in 2016.

Tammy achieved a lifetime ambition working at the London Olympics in 2012.

 

Martin Holmes

Martin qualified from the University of Birmingham in 2006 and after completing a broad range of physiotherapy rotations, specialised in musculoskeletal physiotherapy at QEHB in 2012. Martin has a specialist interest in upper limb pathology and rehabilitation.

Martin was involved in the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games as a physiotherapist within the athletes village and field of play for squash and table tennis. Other sports experience includes Premier League Academy Football, British Judo, UK Ultimate (Frisbee), British Universities and Colleges Sport, and England Hockey’s 2014 Future’s Cup. Martin is HCPC registered and a member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists and The Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Sports and Exercise Medicine. 

 
Stephanie Owen

Stephanie Owen

Stephanie graduated as a podiatrist in 1999 and has specialised in the area of MSK podiatry since 2002. Having completed her MSc in clinical podiatric biomechanics she has worked as a MSK clinician within a wide field including sports medicine, orthopaedics, diabetes and rheumatology. Always enjoying and reading research she has worked as a research assistant in Australia and spent two years lecturing in podiatry at an Irish University.

She currently works closely and alongside consultants at QEHB where she assesses and manages complex mechanical lower limb problems. Working within the SEMS team facilitates a seamless and cohesive treatment pathway for patients who wish to continue with their sport at whatever level.

Stephanie is a keen netballer and understands the demands and needs of the sports person as well as understands the needs and working of the ‘weekend warrior’ and the keen active person wishing to get back to an active lifestyle.

She has special interests in footwear, orthoses, dynamic function, and stress fractures.

 
Manyee Li

Manyee Li

Manyee Li, SEM Specialist Dietitian, also works with the Trust as a Diabetes Specialist Dietitian.

After completing a BSc in Nutrition and Dietetics in Aberdeen, she has worked in a wide range of clinical areas including cardiology/cardio-thoracic surgery and intensive care before completing a PG Diploma in Sport Nutrition with the International Olympic Committee and a MSc in Sport Nutrition at the University of Stirling.

She joined the SEM team at UHB in 2015.
