Ann Henstock, Housekeeper on Ward 513, contacted the Dignity in Care team following the distribution of the Learning Disabilities Made Clear toolkit.
Anne explained that it would be a good idea to have flashcards on the tea trolley to help patients who have communication difficulties, due language barriers or their medical condition.
We did
Jo Bubb, from the Dignity in Care team, had some flashcards created by the Graphics team at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB).
The flashcards cards display photographs of the drink options available to patients during the drinks rounds. The flashcards are attached to the drinks trolley.
The Dignity team are distributing one set to every ward.
Sue Atkins, Clinical Nurse Specialist for Dementia, added:
“It is so important that we get this right for all of our patients, especially for those who are finding it difficult to communicate.
“Keeping hydrated is incredibly important to us all, particularly during the summer months which are approaching. Maintaining good hydration is absolutely critical to maintaining good health, and it becomes even more important to pay attention to as we age”.
