Rehabilitation for the older person (inpatients)

At Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB), our ward physiotherapists work on the principle that age should not be a barrier to effective, evidence-based treatment. Physiotherapy input is directed towards maximising function for as long as possible in all patients, regardless of age, in order to promote quality of life.

The function of the inpatient physiotherapy elderly service is primarily to serve older people admitted with acute medical problems. We aim to enable older people to achieve their maximum functional capacity and return home. It is recognised that inpatient rehabilitation for older people has the potential to improve function and mobility, reduce length of stay in the hospital and reduce admissions to nursing homes.

Patients can be treated within the ward environment but are often treated within the inpatient treatment area.

What problems do we treat?

Inpatient elderly services include the assessment and treatment of older patients admitted with:

  • acute medical problems
  • mobility problems
  • falls and fractures

Lead clinician

Ros Grant, Clinical Specialist, Elderly Medicine.
