Respiratory medicine physiotherapy (inpatients)

We aim to deliver high quality evidenced-based care for patients admitted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB) with acute respiratory failure or exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or asthma.

Non-invasive ventilation (NIV) service

What is NIV?

Non-invasive ventilation (NIV) is the provision of breathing support without the use of an invasive airway or tube. Ventilation is delivered by a mask, and therefore no sedation is required. This enables treatment to occur on the ward, reducing complications, mortality and the length of hospital stay.

Close links have been developed with the Lung Investigation Unit and Sleep Department at QEHB to optimise patient discharge home.

Multispecialty medicine wards

Patient group

Patients with pre-existing chronic respiratory conditions such as COPD or bronchiectasis, and patients in acute respiratory failure due to pneumonia or chest infections, often need specialist physiotherapy input and advice to aid recovery.

In addition, we treat patients transferred from critical care, continuing their rehabilitation programme to optimise exercise tolerance and functional recovery.

Respiratory Support Team (RST)

We are a multi-professional team of respiratory physiotherapists and respiratory nurses who work together to care for patients who are admitted to hospital with an exacerbation of their chronic lung condition. The team works at QEHB with the inpatient services, in clinics with the respiratory consultants, and visits some patients in their homes.

Patient benefits

  • A greater understanding of their chronic disease
  • Improved self-management
  • Advice on rescue medication
  • A personalised home exercise programme
  • Self support exercises to help manage anxiety and breathlessness
