Spinal physiotherapy (outpatients)

The spinal physiotherapy service is headed by three clinical specialists who work closely with the spinal surgery consultants at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB). The team treats patients referred from a number of different sources, including consultants, GPs and other physiotherapists.

Location/facilities

The spinal physiotherapy service is located within Therapy services (North Suite) on level 1 at QEHB.

Which conditions do we treat?

We assess and treat patients with any spinal condition, such as slipped discs, persistent pain and acute whiplash, as well as patients that have undergone spinal interventions, such as an injection or surgery. We offer a range of physiotherapy treatments in line, whenever possible, with current research such as the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines. The physiotherapist may also suggest referrals to other agencies or specialties, such as the multidisciplinary chronic pain team.

The physiotherapy treatments offered include:

  • individual or group-based education, such as general information about pain, activity pacing advice and support with lifestyle change
  • physical treatments, such as joint mobilisation or manipulation, and soft tissue techniques like massage and exercise

QEHB is a regional spinal surgery centre. Our physiotherapists are therefore familiar with treating patients who have undergone spinal surgery and are therefore accustomed to addressing their complex problems such as pain, weakness or disability. We have established protocols of care but our treatments are tailored towards the individual's needs.
