The percentage of patients who required reopening (return to theatre) during the early post-operative phase following first-time, isolated CABG has increased slightly in recent months. An audit involving case-note review has taken place. The main reason for patients requiring reopening is due to bleeding in the early post-operative period. A protocol for handling post-operative bleeding is now being developed to ensure patients continue to receive the best possible care following their operation.
Why is this indicator important?
A percentage of first-time, isolated CABG patients will require reopening (resternotomy) to address bleeding or other problems occurring early after operation. Some patients are however at higher risk of bleeding, if they need to stay on aspirin up to the day of operation for example.
How do we measure this indicator?
Percentage of patients admitted for first-time, isolated CABG who were required reopening before discharge.
